The Junkyard Mailbag: Wednesday Edition (Part 1)
March 10, 2010
Junkyard,
I think Seneca Wallace is the answer to the question "What will Browns president Mike Holmgren do about the starting QB situation?"
Wallace seems like a steady quarterback: he’s has no major injuries, he’s made some NFL starts and he’s a relatively young 29.
Also, as a guy who played for years under Holmgren in Seattle, Wallace is already familiar with the West Coast offense that Holmgren wants to install with the Browns.
Wallace will be a good quarterback to bridge the Browns’ QB gap for the next season or two- especially now that Derek Anderson has been released and Brady Quinn may also leave.
Another thing: I have to disagree with your recommendation that the Browns try to draft Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford.
The guy just had arm surgery. He will command top dollars. And he has as much NFL experience as I do.
Personally, I’d prefer Holmgren draft a quarterback like Tony Pike (Cincinnati) or Jevan Snead (Mississippi) in the 3rd round - and groom either behind Wallace for a season or two.
Now, would THIS scenario be enough to get you to step away from your “Draft Bradford” idea?
Also, seriously, drop your whole "Trade Joe Thomas" idea.
I just bought a Thomas jersey to replace my old Braylon Edwards shirt.
If Thomas gets traded, I'm holding you personally responsible for buying me a new jersey.
Andrew
Junkyard replies:
Great e-mail, Andrew!
We agree: Seneca Wallace WILL be a safe pair of hands as the Browns short-term starting QB.
He doesn’t have a great career record as a starting quarterback (5-7), but his touchdown-to-interception rate is nearly 2 to 1 (25 TDs, 14 interceptions).
And Wallace gets rid of the ball (he’s played 47 games, but has only been sacked 42 times).
The guy is a clear upgrade over Quinn - or the just-departed Anderson - as Browns starting quarterback!
Also, Andrew, Junkyard has been riding the “The Browns Need to Draft Jevan Snead” bandwagon almost as long as we’ve been on “The Browns Should Trade Joe Thomas” train.
So, no, we’d have no problem - at all - with your “Acquire Wallace, Draft Snead” scenario for the Browns.
It’s a great “Option B” plan.
Still, our ideal Option A is for the Browns to draft Bradford and make him the starter, with Wallace as the steady backup.
And, yes, even if Cleveland would have to trade Joe Thomas to get Bradford - which would likely need to happen.
Bradford solves the Browns quarterback issue for 10 seasons.
That's way better than the two-season solution Seneca Wallace would provide as the unquestioned starting QB.
Now, Andrew, notice how Junkyard skillfully avoided the topic of providing you with a new jersey if Thomas is traded?
